I’ve spent over 43 years in construction.
I’ve worked on high-end projects for companies like Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, and The Mayflower Hotel. Over time, you develop a sense for how spaces really function — not how they’re staged to look.

As we toured senior facilities, I couldn’t turn that instinct off.

In some places, we saw small homes converted into care facilities. On paper, they were “compliant.” In reality, they were narrow, awkward, and barely adapted for the people living in them. The layouts were wrong. The flow didn’t make sense. Safety had been treated as a checkbox, not a responsibility.

In other places, we toured large corporate facilities. They were clean. Polished. Professional.
But cold.

What struck me most was the feeling that my parents wouldn’t be living there — they would be managed. Scheduled. Processed. Reduced to a room number.

Standing in one of those hallways, I remember thinking:

There has to be a better way than this.

THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED 

That moment became the turning point.

I realized that for a fraction of the cost of assisted living, I could use everything I knew — decades of building, planning, and problem-solving — to make a home truly safe and functional for aging.

Not by “medicalizing” it.
